NYC Events This Weekend

After a grueling week, I’m in desperate need of art, music, booze and tattoos. Perfect timing for this weekend’s events in NYC, including these favorites: Dr. Sketchy’s 3-Year Anniversary, Tattoo Culture’s dual art show, The Ugly Sweater Jambouree, and Daredevil Tattoo’s Recession Special. They all begin tomorrow, and yes, I’m planning to hit each one, the tattoo gods willin.

Cheap Tattoos For a Cause

With the economy going down like a family values senator in a gay bath house, Daredevil Tattoo is offering a recession special meant to both bring people into the shop who normally couldn’t afford tattoo work now AND to reach out to help people and pets in need. Here’s the deal:

• A special sheet of designs will be offered at a price of $50 per tattoo. The usual shop minimum is $100.
• On December 20th 100% of the cost of each tattoo will be donated by the shop and the artist doing the tattoo.
• $40 of each tattoo will go towards Food Bank NYC.
• $10 of each tattoo will go towards animal rescue shelters.
• After December 20th, Daredevil will continue to offer the special and will continue to donate the shops percentage to the selected charities.

Michelle Myles, co-owner of Daredevil with Brad Fink explains why she chose these charities. “Food banks are suffering with the loss of so many corporate donors, combined with greater demand. Animal shelters are over capacity with animals abandoned by owners faced with the loss of their homes and jobs.”

Usually, the sheets are secret but Michelle gave me a sneak peak at her and her crew working on them with the photo above.

I joked around that, if I found a pomegranate on one of the sheets, I’d get it. So guess what was added? Looks like I’m getting tattooed tomorrow. Just need to find a free space on me that’s not already needled or part of my overall plan!

Ugly Holiday Sweater Jamboree

After I get tattooed, I’m gonna need to chill and I can’t think of a better way than with a dozen musicians and people in hideous holiday garb, so I’m heading a couple of blocks from Daredevil Tattoo to Parkside Lounge where the Ugly Holiday Sweater Jamboree will be rockin acoustic from 2-5PM [no cover!]. And yes, I went on eBay and got my super-unfashionable bow and bell knit number for the event.

Dr. Sketchy’s Anti-Art School

Hopefully, I won’t be drinking too much spiked egg nog, but even if I do, I’ll stumble over to The Slipper Room, also on the LES and in walking distance, where the gorgeous and most fabulous Molly Crabapple will be celebrating three years of her Dr. Sketchy’s Anti-Art School from 4-7PM. Bring your own supplies to draw top fetish model Darenzia in her Dr. Sketchy’s debut! The cover is $10 in advance and $12 at the door. [FYI: the Dr. Sketchy's book makes a great gift!]

Tattoo Culture’s Art Show

To cap off the evening, I’ll head over the Williamsburg Bridge to Brooklyn for Tattoo Culture’s dual artist show featuring Sara Antoinette Martin and Richard Meyer, both painters heavily influenced by tattoo art and sideshow.

The opening is from 7-10PM and is sponsored by Coney Island Lager (whose tattooed logo was created by resident TC artist Dave Wallin).
